I was born in Canberra, Australia, and now live in Karawang, Indonesia, where I’m fortunate to pursue my creative passions, writing, photography, and art. My love for storytelling began during my time in the Royal Australian Navy, and it has only grown since then. Inspired by writers like Robert Louis Stevenson, I explore a range of genres, sharing everything from whimsical children’s tales to deeply personal stories of resilience.
One of my most meaningful works, The Longest Way Home, is a memoir shaped by a life altering accident that changed how I see the world and deepened my love for the written word. I also enjoy crafting children’s books like Bag Chip Bird, which invites readers into an imaginative journey from a bird’s perspective. With more than 24 published titles in paperback, eBook, and audiobook formats, my writing continues to reflect stories and ideas I feel called to share. You can find my books on Amazon, Rakuten Kobo, and Google Books, just click on the Writing and Books link in the menu and then select the Book Shop Link to choose your preferred book, platform and format.
Alongside writing, photography and drawing have always been essential parts of how I observe and respond to the world. Whether it is a fleeting moment captured through a lens or a quiet sketch drawn in a travel book, these creative expressions help me hold on to small details that often go unnoticed.
Living in Indonesia offers rich inspiration, whether I am writing on the balcony in Karawang, sketching between coffee breaks in a Bandung café, or taking a photo on a quiet walk through streets of Jakarta. On my Substack blog, W. D. Mayberry, I share book reviews, life reflections, and insights into my creative process. My series Things I Blog offers a behind scenes look at themes and experiences that shape my work.
